The Best Forest Cabins in Chile?

Thursday 2nd February 2017

To be fair, we haven't had any experience of other Chilean forest cabins, but the eight bed cabin we were shown into on arrival at Cabañas Altué seemed very well appointed, was in a very peaceful setting, and had great views down the wooded valley it's situated in.

In the bright morning light we started to appreciate the external aspects of the site that hadn't been visible when we arrived in the dark near midnight. A small number of attractive cabins were grouped loosely on a tree covered hillside, with our cabin being one of the lowest and, being on the edge of the treeline, had superb views down the wooded valley and the misty blue Andes mountains and volcanoes beyond.

We were most impressed with Eddy and Sara's choice. After our long day getting here yesterday, a relaxing day exploring the site and all its facilities seemed like a good idea. We had an unusual alarm clock .....

Early each morning, as it was getting light, this little fellow, or one of his clan, would make a hell of a racket by attacking what he presumably thought was an intruder on his territory - his reflection in the mirrored windows of our cabin.

Just one of many creatures in this rural farm setting, chickens of all sizes ran around all over the place, hunting around the cabins for scraps, as well as in the fields.

There were horses available for riding ......

Sheep grazing nearby,

and the four lovely alpacas which were let loose on the site every afternnon:

They especially liked the area around the pool where the grass was greener. Here's one of Clemente's friends looking at them .....

and one of them looking at Clemente

and the same one looking at me ...

and by the stationary engines which would fetch a good price in the UK

By and large, they were quite happy grazing by the pool, even when Clemente and his friends were noisily jumping and splashing.

But one of them seemed to be the guardian and was worried about the dog.

He would make little charges near the dog, which was actually really sweet and wouldn't hurt a fly. If you went up to him, he'd roll over and encourage you to stroke his tummy. But the alpaca wasn't at all convinced that he wasn't a danger to them ....
but he was just a big scaredy-cat really ......

Amongst the cabins were many other huts and constructions of various sizes offering, for instance, a shooting range (air rifle) and things a bit like coconut shies where you could try and knock tin cans of the shelf with bean bags:

A games & party room.

Nicely furnished eating, drinking & socialising areas:

A trampoline with basketball net,

and a hot-tub, jaccuzzi and sauna:

and after dark, the pool became a colour-changing light show:

In between our cabin and a neighbouring one was the ....

A general purpose leisure area with a hammock, comfy seating and interesting objects .....

Sometime during the day, Mauricio & partner and Tamara (another of Sara's nieces) arrived with lots of extra food, drink & charcoal so that we could have a great big barbecue on the unusual grill provided with each cabin. Clemente stayed out late socialising with all his new found friends.

And that was that for Thursday, a very sociable and interesting day & evening.
