Chile in flames

We had expected to have an earthquake or two while here, and indeed there have been several, albeit none that we could feel, but we hadn't expected the disastrous wild fires which are destroying vast swathes of forest and many homes.

It really struck home when Sara heard on Wednesday evening that Clemente's grandfather had been evacuated from his house as the fires were threatening.

Clemente would have been with him if he hadn't come to Santiago to join us.

We have yet to hear if Clemente's grandfather's house has survived, but it didn't look hopeful as many neighbour's houses had already been destroyed when he left.

We have since heard that Clemente's grandfather's house has survived, whether by luck or the efforts of the gallant Chilean firefighters we don't know, but a relief none the less.

Very distressing to hear that many of the fires have been started deliberately, poor people being paid apparently by others with financial interests or something to gain by reducing the forest areas.
