Life in the slow lane.

Although it was a little disappointing to miss out on seeing anything of Funchal, the most important thing had been achieved in catching up with Black Watch. At last I could relax and enjoy the cruise.

The first evening dragged a bit as our 8:30 pm sitting for dinner seemed to be a long time coming, especially as I'd been up since before 3 am and had had only two minimal in-flight snacks since then.

Walking around together, familiarising myself with the ship again, the pool looked most inviting, and, excitingly lively as the ship moved around in the north Atlantic swell. A crew member confirmed that it wasn't off limits, so I had the pool to myself for half an hour or so.

And what a change from the England I'd left behind, cold and gloomy, now swimming in warm seawater in a balmy 19°C climate. Life was looking good.

I was quite ready for bed by the time we'd finished the usual (for Black Watch) sumptuous dinner, having then been up for more than 19 hours. How nice it was as well to be waited on, and not have to find my own supper. Our table waiter, Sanit, was pleased to see me at last, having heard all about my 'problem'!

And I got to meet Christine & Jim, our dinner table companions. Like myself, Jim has hearing problems so we can happily shout at each other during dinner every night. They too are leaving Black Watch at Callao, so Fred Olsen staff have matched us up very well.
