Hostal Providencia; the best hostel in Chile?

Wednesday 25th January 2017

The hostel Eddy manages is not exactly designed for mouldy oldies like us. I'd guess we are some 30 - 40 years above the average age of most residents, though we did see a few people of similar age to us, but they didn't stay very long.

Breakfast is a help yourself buffet affair, very similar to some of the cheapest American motels we stayed in during our round-the-world trip in 2009, albeit with rather less choice of anything.

But, if you're a starving student on a budget, you can have a veritable feast. Much better apparently than most hostels which are very stingy with their breakfasts, if they even offer any.

The reception is manned 24/7  by friendly multi-lingual staff; very useful if you don't speak any Spanish, as we don't.

On our last night prior to leaving for Pichilemu, they also had a Risotto Night - excellent, especially with the free glass of wine.

The gaily painted shady courtyard area was also popular, especially with the smokers. As it rarely  rains in Santiago, and is warm in the evenings, this social area was always populated.

The internet is also top rate. A significant number of people would sit around all day doing things on their smartphones.

And here's Barbara with their nice map of Chile - a very strange shaped country.

And here's me in Rome, en route to Heathrow, regretting that I forgot to buy any pisco in the rush to get to the airport in Santiago.
